Simply-The Ultimate Huka Experience!
Departing on a 6-7 hour trip you will fly either south from the Lodge to the Kaimanawa Range wilderness, with possible sightings of wild horses and Red or Sika deer. Land next to the famous Rangitikei River to view the large trophy-size Rainbow trout. Return to the lake edge via areas of volcanic activity and craters of the Tongariro National Park OR alternatively travel north via the famous Huka Falls, following the Waikato River to the Wai-O-Tapu and Waimangu geothermal regions. Land on the rim of the dormant volcano Mt. Tarawera, which last erupted in 1881. Return to Lake Taupo via some of the spectacularly lush farm and forest land of the central North Island.
After your 1.5 hour flight, join either the Waianiwa, a stylish 50ft twin-diesel launch with a cruising speed of between 12-20 knots or Iridium, a luxury 70ft launch with maximum speed of28 knots. One of these vessels will be found awaiting your arrival in a remote bay. Enjoy a delicious buffet lunch and whilst cruising back to the Taupo Marina try your hand at trout fishing as you take in the spectacular scenery.
Remote Heli-Fishing!
Summer in Taupo is the dry fly fisherman’s Mecca. The tributary streams will still produce smaller fish to a well presented dry fly but most often the action is in the hills to the east of Lake Taupo. The helicopter has opened up the rivers of the Kaweka, Kaimanawa and Urewera Ranges to the fly fisherman and you can now access the Ngaruroro, Upper Mohaka, Rangitikei, Wanganui, and Waiau. The trophy-size Rainbow and Brown trout can be sighted in the crystal clear streams, challenging your skills with either a dry-fly, nymph or light spinning tackle. Huka Lodge’s experienced guides will provide you with the local knowledge for the angling experience of a lifetime. ‘Catch and release’ is the practice, however there are always great photo opportunities.
