Orion Expedition Cruises: Rugged Adventure Meets Five-Star Luxury
Ventures where few ships have sailed before, destined for shores few travellers have the privilege to visit. And she does so while surrounding her discerning guests in all the five-star luxury associated with a mega-yacht. The MV Orion is a 53-cabin luxury expedition vessel purpose-built to access the inaccessible, from the unforgiving icy waters of the Antarctic to isolated South Pacific islands.
Accommodating 106 guests and a crew of 75, Orion is the only true international-standard, five-star expedition vessel operating year-round from Australia. Onboard, guests are surrounded in comfort and style with spacious, ocean-view staterooms and suites – some with private French balconies - spa treatments at the intimate Vega Health Spa, and world-class dining created by Sydney star chef Serge Dansereau in the Constellation Restaurant.
Orion guests are afforded once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences, including a chance to visit the historic Antarctic base camps of polar explorers Mawson, Scott and Shackleton. The ship also sails to Australia’s remote and rugged Kimberley and Arnhem Land, New Zealand and Sub-Antarctic Islands, Melanesia, Papua New Guinea and Southeast Asia. The Orion philosophy is to work closely with tribal chiefs and other traditional leaders in even the most remote destinations. The resulting partnerships help sustain the local community and preserve its cultural integrity while gaining entrée for Orion’s guests to places and people far off the tourist path.
For shore excursions, Orion utilises its 10 inflatable powered Zodiacs, perfect for exploration and access into hard to reach places. Experienced Expedition Team members guide guests through the natural and cultural wonders of their destinations. These include ancient Aboriginal rock art and spectacularly rugged scenery in the Kimberley of northern Australia, megapodes laying their eggs in the volcanic sands of Melanesia’s Savo Island, the ancient temples of the Angkor Wat, and the legendary Asaro mudmen of Papua New Guinea.
Back onboard Orion, the unforgettable onshore experiences are enhanced by enlightening presentations by members of the expedition team in the ship’s own state-of-the-art, 90-seat Cosmos Lecture Theatre. Arriving in June each year our Kimberley coast voyages across the north west of Australia coincide with the migration of the world’s largest population of humpback whales, said to number around 22,000 as they make their 13,000 kilometre journey to the warm waters for mating and calving.
Being in the Kimberley between May and September means we have many opportunities to see these giants and their calves as they put on a show as they breach and tail slap. Arriving in Rabaul in Papua New Guinea, invariably, Mt Tavurvur greets Orion with regular guttural eruptions, sending ash thousands of feet into the sky … a grand sight that shows the mighty power of nature. Simpson Harbour is an ancient flooded caldera which dwarfs Tavurvur, so one can but imagine the enormity of the explosion that created it around 1,500 years ago. During Orion’s summer season in New Zealand, the ship stops at White Island, an active volcano in the Bay of Plenty. With experienced guides from Whakatane, guests don masks and hard hats and hike inside the crater to the rim of the main vent. Try to imagine a kettle with a spout about 20m across and you’ll get the picture. Why do we need guides? Because there are areas in the crater where the crust is so thin that you could put your foot straight through into 600 degree sulphur. It’s the highlight of the cruise for many of our passengers.
